Quality Mining Lamps Bridgend

Back in the 1860’s, E. Thomas developed some ingenious safe burning quality mining lamps. Bridgend is not far from the modern-day headquarters, and they have now been in business for around 163 years!

Before E. Thomas developed his ‘Evan Thomas Type No.7 Lamp’, there were a few other sharp attempts at creating the safest and most durable mining lamp available. For instance, one named the ‘Davy Lamp’ was made and very happily received by the mining community and the public at large. One correspondent to the paper titled ‘Cumberland Pacquet’ stated: “The Lamp offers absolute security to the minor… with the excellent ventilation of the Whitehaven Collieries and the application of Sir Humphrey’s valuable instrument, the accidents from the explosion of hydrogene which have occurred will by this happy invention be avoided.”
Whilst the faith in the lamp’s design was appreciated, thereafter, firedamp explosions in the Whitehaven pits killed 137 people in just thirty years.
The ‘Davy Lamp’, was not a success.

Other contenders that bore out to be useful in the mining industry were the ‘Dr. William Reid Clanny’ Lamp and the ‘Evan Thomas Type No. 7’ Lamp which was a great improvement on the lamps that had been created up to that point. Some had not been well suited to the conditions in a mine, being too fragile and delicate. Others were very heavy, too heavy for their purpose and use. But the Evan Thomas lamp seemed to tick all the boxes.

Over 160 years later, E. Thomas & Williams Ltd are still doing the same – making quality mining lamps that tick all the boxes. Quality Mining lamps, Bridgend town residents know, is something that E. Thomas & Williams absolutely know how to do. After 160 years, you would certainly hope so!
